As-sallaamu Alaikum Wa Rahmahtullahi Wa Barakatuh,

Wow, it’s been a long time. I hope everyone is in the best health and eeman, Ameen! A lot has changed since the first post, so let’s take a run down of where Marc Nahhass is right now.

Firstly, Marc Nahhass is now a one-woman operation. My partner had to step away for personal reasons but she is still offering great insight and suggestions to almost every facet of the company. I wish her the best in all of her endeavors and hope to continue working with her and to see what started out as an idea develop into a wonderful success, Insha’Allah.

Secondly, because of the first development, I’ve decided to push the launch date to September 15. This will be about 4 months after we had anticipated but I am still working with a lot of different vendors to get the best variety and quality to offer on the website. Rather than rush the opening of the site, I’d much rather take time to offer truly the best garments.

Lastly, I will be contacting the first 25 respondents to the “We Want You” post tomorrow to get addresses to send your choice of three items, so look out for an email from me.

Stay tuned for more updates.

Organic Clothing….? Friday, Jan 5 2007

As-sallaamu Alaikum Wa Rahmahtullahi Wa Barakatuh,

It’s been so long since we’ve talked, sisters. After a much needed break, from work that is, we’re back in the full swing of things again. We’ve spent our few days off tracking down suppliers, looking over garments, talking to Saudi Arabia, and tapping away on laptops until our eyes hurt! A tireless search for the best, most unique and modest garments to truly make Marc Nahhass stand out from the rest.

We’d like to take this time out to feature one of the lines we will be carrying. Firstly, let’s start off by saying that although these items may be a bit trendy for most, they can also be that signature piece in your closet that just POPS! Pair it with a long skirt and cardigan, or thow it over a plain abaya, you simply can’t go wrong with these pieces. We’ll only be carrying a few of these pieces in limited quantities and sizes, but if they’re a hit, we’ll gladly feature more products in the future.

So, who are we talking about? We’re talking about Tarsian & Blinkley, the first in socially responsible, Afghan-made, hand-embroidered organic clothing. Tarsian & Blinkley is a bridge between worlds that rarely collide - socially conscious clothing and accessories that feed the fashionista’s appetite.

What makes this company truly unique is the collaborative process in which it engages its female handiworkers. They don’t etch embroidery designs on every product, rather, they encourage the women to come up with their own embroidery, beading, sequin-work, or crochet designs based on their general “art direction.” The results are wonderful, often one-of-a-kind pieces exhibiting a wide breadth of character and originality.

Here’s some info from the company’s website, tarsian.com, where you can get an in-depth view of the company as well as view their past and present collections:

The past 24 years have been an unbelievably brutal period in the history of Afghanistan that has left much of the country and its people devastated. Yet a rich cultural legacy remains and that is what Tarsian & Blinkley seeks to revitalize. Tarsian & Blinkley works with local and international non-profit organizations in Afghanistan to create employment and educational opportunities for Afghan women in an environment that really nurtures and protects them from the exploitations they would otherwise face in their daily lives.

We pay our employees extremely fair wages that are well above country standards and expose them to market-sensitive practices of quality control. Our partners provide skill training such as tailoring and literacy. In exchange for the opportunity to make a sustainable living, feed themselves and their families, and acquire some rarely had peace of mind, Tarsian & Blinkley gets wonderfully loyal employees who stitch, embroider, bead, and knit beautiful clothing and accessories using age-old handicrafts techniques unique to Central Asia.

We work individually with each of the women that we employ to identify their unique strengths and handicrafts skills. Rosama, Marzia, Anise, Fatima, Karima, and dozens more….each has a unique tale and creativity that is distinctively expressed in the clothing that we produce.

Tarsian & Blinkley’s philosophy revolves around the following ideals

To create beautiful garments that integrate, in a very modern fashion, the elaborate handicrafts talents of Afghan women, “transcend the category” of common ethnochic fashions, and link East and West at a unique level of artistry

To constantly pump money through the hands of a group of people who would otherwise have little or no access to income-earning due to poor education and low social standing

To place proper monetary value on the demanding work of embroidery and compensate female embroiderers in ways that will win them higher status in their own families and communities

Arafat…. Friday, Dec 29 2006

As-sallaamu Alaikum Wa Rahmahtullahi Wa Barakatuh Sisters,

Tomorrow is a very special day, Masha’Allaah. Tomorrow is the Day of Arafat. As much as we at Marc Nahhass care about your outside, we are even more concerned with your inside. Take tomorrow, for those who can and FAST. We cannot stress the benefit of fasting on this most perfect of days, walhamdulillah. It is reported in a hadeeth from Aishah, radiallahu anhu, that the Rasoollullah, Sallallaahu Alayhi wa Sallam said: ’There is no day on which Allaah frees people from the Fire as He does on the day of ‘Arafah. He comes close (to those standing on ‘Arafah) and then He revels before His angels, saying: What are these people seeking?’ (Muslim) And Abu Qatada reported that the Messenger of Allaah, Salallaahu alayhi wa Sallaam, said: ‘Fasting the day of ‘Arafah expiates the sins of two years: a past one and a coming one. And fasting the day of ‘Ashura expiates the sins of the past year.”

Oh Believing Sisters, take tomorrow and stay in dhikr and remember Allah, read Quran, and perform the deeds of the people of Paradise so that Allaah may make you of them, Ameen! Make sincere duaa to Allah so that your sins may be expiated from you and prepare yourselves for the Eid on Saturday, insha’Allaah. Start fresh and get rejuvenated.

Jazzakallaahu Khairun for all those who have been responding, we are thankful for your feedback and may Allah reward each and every one of you for taking time out to stop by and leave your comments, Ameen! Insha’Allaah, be sure to tell your friends and keep the feedback pouring in. We want to make sure that this is truly a representation of what’s needed in this market. We will be responding to each and every comment and contacting our first 25 posters to send them them gifts, so be sure to leave your email addresses.

Hijabs, Abayas, and Caftans…Oh My! Sunday, Dec 24 2006

As-sallaamu Alaikum Wa Rahmahtullahi Wa Barakatuh,

So, I was supposed to work on the mock-up today but I’m so unmotivated. Its more practical for me to work on it, I have a little bit more design skills than the others and I’m the only one willing to brave the craziness outside tomorrow and meet up with Mr. M. It’s really difficult, my daughter is going crazy. I think she’s trying to kill me with chatter. She just won’t stop talking.

Promo time… Saturday, Dec 23 2006

As-sallaamu Alaikum Wa Rahmahtullahi Wa Barakatuh,

It seems like only yesterday, we were just writing to introduce ourselves. Wait a minute, it was yesterday! Anywho, today we met up with the fantabulous Mr. M to try and finalize our first promotional piece. You see, yesterday, during a much-deserved work break, we decided to change the original color of our introductory postcard. At first, we were just going to stick with a simple gray front and back with a quick introduction. After speaking to an employee at FedEx/Kinkos the price went up from .09 cents a copy to .89 cents a copy! Okay, this is a brand new venture and we’re investing all of our savings into this, we CANNOT afford $890 for postcards. That’s just ridiculous. As if that wasn’t bad enough, come to find out there are restrictions on postcards that we hadn’t incorporated into our original design. Amazing Mr. M to the rescue.

Walhamdullillah, we had to take a time out and make a really good salat because we were starting to get discouraged, but, Allah is Merciful! We found a place online that Mr. M had used previously that offered the company an amazing price on the postcards and business cards, and they turn out an awesome product.

So off to the Square to have some awesome food and talk over some more design aspects. We even brought mock-ups for the website to tear apart. We basically finalized the wording on the back, switched to colors around to see how it looked and talked about the prospect of using promotional photos for the website. Insha’Allah, we’re keeping in mind the duaa about images and are trying to keep everything in compliance with Quran and Sunnah. Check back soon to read about today from Mr. M’s perspective and see what he’s working on. We’re meeting up again on Monday. Yeah it’s Christmas but so what, we don’t celebrate that holiday anyway! Another reason why being Muslim is awesome!

Sallaam!

P.S. If you’re interested in receiving any of our promotional items or want one for your Dawah Center, Student Association, or office, or friends and family, shoot us a quick email at marcnahhass@gmail.com with your name and address and we’ll send you one.

Calling all stylish muslimas…. Wednesday, Dec 20 2006

As-sallaamu Alaikum Wa Rahmahtullahi Wa Barakatuh Everybody!

In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful…

Welcome to Marc Nahhass’s exclusive on-line blog. Marc Nahhass was created by Muslim sisters, living in America, looking to provide Muslim women with modest clothing options that suit their lives.

Oftentimes, you find that there aren’t many options for clothes that are both modest, stylish, and easy to wear in the office, school, or wherever! Everything is too large, too baggy, not easy-to-wear, don’t function well, or maybe… they’re just not your style. Marc Nahhass aims to provide Muslim sisters with fashionable and affordable options that suit their sometimes hectic day. We’ve scoured the planet, literally (or at least it seems like it), for the most modern, functioning, stylish clothing available to Muslim women.

Don’t worry, Marc Nahhass will also offer traditional abayas, overheads, niqabs, and a ton more stuff too! You see, Marc Nahhass was thought up by a mixture of cultures, age groups, and levels of modesty… From jeans, niqabs, overheads, to jilbabs, we’ve worn it! So why then, not represent our mish-mash of styles? Not every Muslim sister dresses the same, but every Muslim sister should feel comfortable with and in their clothes. Our goal is to get you covered!

This blog will give you the play-by-play, so to speak, of the company through all of the steps on the way to our grand opening. Check in to hear from our fabulous graphic designer, Mr. M, and from the owners. Take a look through Mr. M’s eyes to see how he deals with our craziness and preview some of our promotional items! Leave us a note, make suggestions, or email us for business opportunities!

Insha’Allah, Allah will make this easy and bless us in our endeavor. Make duaa for us!
